Dear Editor,
In response to an article in your newspaper about some parents wishing to teach their children at home instead of sending them to school, I would like to express my views. This idea, in my opinion, is definitely not a good one.
Parents may think they are capable of teaching their children, and there is no need to send them to school. Undeniably, some parents do have the ability to inculcate kids with proper knowledge and values, but is this enough to replace schools?
Surely not! In school, what students gain is not just factual knowledge, but also other crucial skills that they must possess. For instance, by completing tasks and doing projects, they acquire interpersonal skills. By taking responsibilities of being class captains, club leaders and prefects, they develop a sense of leadership. By attending regular morning assemblies, they establish an awareness of current affairs in society and introspect themselves. Even by having quarrels with others in school, they learn how to get along with teachers and classmates, and how to respect others in the future. What's more, multifarious extra-curricular activities help boasting their self-esteem. Do parents provide all these at home?
Furthermore, schools are important places where students spend their time with joy and sorrow, with success and failure. Through the years of life in the campus, students would cherish the precious experience they had ther. Every step of stairs, every chair and every blackboard symbolize their memorable school life, which is no doubt invaluable. Many graduated friends told me that they miss those days in their old schools, and wish to go back and stay there again. On the contrary, if students are kept at home being taught by their parents, they are deprived of the golden opportunity to enjoy school life. Obviously, after a year or two, they would regret that they had agreed to stay at home.
